These besom brooms are made by the Nash family, whose ancestors having been making them in the same way for generations. As a mark of their quality they hold the Royal Warrant of Appointment as long serving suppliers of ‘Besoms Brooms and Pea Sticks’ to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The handle is made from Hazel which has been cut and allowed to mature for up to 18 months. Then its stripped of its bark and honed into shape by hand. Birch branches are used to form the broom head which are cut in the winter months (when the sap is absent) and stored in airy, damp free conditions for up to 18 months. The besom itself takes only a short while to make, but the preparation takes a whole year to complete. The timber used in the manufacture of besoms comes from managed plantations by the traditional coppicing method. The height of the finished besom is approx 5 ft / 1.3mt.
