This small portable greenhouse is designed and manufactured by a master blacksmith in rural England. The design is very much influenced by classic Victorian gardening paraphernalia but is a copyright design and made in very limited numbers.
The greenhouse was designed to be a practical and larger alternative to the cloche or cold frame. It is approximately 54" in length and runs on two specially made 12" cast iron wheels. When the two hinged handles are lifted, they lock against the end of the frame and allow the whole thing to be moved about like a barrow. The floor is loose boarded so, by removing these boards, the frame can be used directly over the ground as a cloche. Each roof panel lifts and folds completely over to the opposite side for access and there is a seed tray (not shown in the photograph) at the level of the horizontal glazing line. The wheels and axle can also be removed to facilitate access through standard doorways.
The whole thing is a charming and practical piece of period style garden equipment and will last indefinately if painted every now and then. The construction is first rate throughout. There are no ugly welds to be seen and this little greenhouse is totally convincing as a period piece. It can be painted any colour, although white or mid green have been the most popular finishes. The glazing is 24oz horticultural glass which is the most appropriate form to retain its period feel.
